Why Signage Should Be Considered Early in Design

By the time a signage problem appears on site, many of the easier decisions have already been made. The façade may be resolved, services coordinated, finishes selected and circulation routes fixed.

Introducing signage at this stage can result in awkward placement, visible fixings, restricted sightlines or unnecessary changes. Early signage planning gives the project team more flexibility to connect identification, wayfinding, accessibility and brand communication with the building itself.

Australian wayfinding guidance also recommends integrating wayfinding during the early stages of planning through collaboration between design and construction teams.

1. Protect Design Intent and Buildability

Architectural signage has practical requirements beyond its appearance. Its scale, mounting, structural support, illumination, materials and installation access all need to work with the building.

Reviewing these details while drawings are still developing helps prevent signage from appearing added after the architecture is complete. It also allows the signage partner to assess whether the proposed concept can be manufactured, installed and maintained as intended.

Early collaboration gives architects and designers more control over the final result while giving builders clearer information before finishes, façades and services are locked in.

2. Make Wayfinding Part of the User Journey

Effective wayfinding begins with understanding how people approach, enter and move through a site. Key destinations, decision points, accessible routes and sightlines should be identified alongside the building’s circulation plan.

This allows identification, directional, amenity and statutory signs to operate as one coordinated system rather than a collection of individual signs. It also helps the signage hierarchy remain consistent with the brand and interior environment.

A holistic approach that considers spatial design and wayfinding information together makes navigation easier to understand.

Accessibility details also need careful coordination. The National Construction Code includes specific requirements for the location, contrast, illumination and installation of certain tactile and braille signs.

3. Reduce Late Changes and Coordination Pressure

Signage can affect several project packages, including structure, electrical services, cladding, joinery, landscaping and approvals.

When these requirements are left until late in the project, unresolved details can lead to additional RFIs, site adjustments and coordination between trades. Early signage planning helps establish responsibilities, installation access, approval requirements and sign locations before construction reaches its least flexible stage.

The result is a signage package that is easier to document, procure and deliver while remaining consistent with the surrounding architecture.
